Some of the biggest challenges my clients and students have is figuring out their food.

I know that a lot of you get confused. "Should I be eating this? What's good for me?" We go looking for online articles for answers. We go looking for online videos. We try and make all the cool recipes that people are making and sometimes our digestion ends up funky. Sometimes our minds end up feeling funky about that too because we're like, "What the heck? I don't even really know what I should be eating for me."

I'm going to give you three ways to not overthink your food so that you can feel a little bit more empowered in this area.

3 ways to simplify your food.

The first thing is so simple. You're going to be like, "Duh," but it really is.

1) Eat what works for you.

Write down, grab a piece of paper and a pen if you have it handy or just think in your mind. What foods feel really good in your body after you eat them? By really good, I mean you feel energized, you feel present, you feel focused, you feel full and nourished, satisfied with that food and digestion works properly.

So, think about what the foods are that already work for you. Go ahead and write those down. You might feel like, "Hey, a nice bowl of pasta with side of veg really feels good to me."

Be aware of thoughts like this, "I actually need some meat, but I'm afraid to eat meat because somebody said I shouldn't have that." Da, da, da, da, da.

Don't let external things tell you what you should and shouldn't eat.

I want you to think solely about your own body and the way that you feel when you eat these foods. I know that you have certain foods that you're like, "Heck yeah. Every time I eat this, I feel amazing!" or, "When I eat in this way, I feel amazing, but for some reason, I don't do that all the time."

Eat what works for you.

2) Don't eat what doesn't work for you.

You probably already know as soon as you eat...whatever that is.

Maybe in this case, maybe you eat a piece of meat. You end up feeling really sluggish for a couple days. That's a sign that that much meat or meat in general is not awesome for you.

We don't have to listen to what everybody else's diet plans are because the truth is, a diet is not black and white.

There is not one side and the other that we need to fit into.

Eating is an entire rainbow of possibilities and joy and smells and sights and colors that we need to start bringing in to our food to bring this full enjoyment into our life.

We already know what doesn't really feel good in our bodies, so don't eat it.

I'll tell you what. I broke up broccoli a long time ago. I don't like it. It doesn't like me. I also have to be careful with black beans even though I'm living in burrito heaven out in California. Everybody loves this stuff. It doesn't do so good for me. I know that. So, I make the choice to have that stuff much less often or just avoid it.

If you know that something is going to screw you up for hours or maybe into the next day, skip the food. Don't eat it. Your body is telling you it's not a good food for you.

You don't need to go combing through the internets to find out that information. You already have it. That's what I'm trying to get at.

Food is really simple. If we look at what works for our own body and leave the rest alone, we're going to do okay. You're going to do okay. Then comes my third point.

3) Have peace while eating.

When we eat, it should be with full presence, full peace, full thanks and gratitude for what is on our plate, and most of all, giving us the power to understand what kind of foods actually work for our bodies.

If we have meals and we're sitting here thinking, "I'm worried about what this is going to do for me. Oh, I shouldn't be having this bad meat. Bad. Bad. I shouldn't have that food. I've been told this is really bad. Da, da, da, da, da."

Do you know what that does to our mind? It already puts a negativity in the food.

We don't need that. We should be putting positivity in our food because that food is still energy. The energy we put in the food gets in our body. It turns into tissues and energy and helps us thrive. If we have doubts, fear, disbelief about what we're eating and our food, it's going to turn into that same kind of energy. It's not going to digest well because the mind, body, and spirit are all connected.

So, let's start to bring some of these very simple practices in to what we're doing every day with our food.

You guys, food is so simple. You just need to listen to what your body is calling for and then honor that.

So, overall, don't overthink your foods. This is a beautiful thing. Have what works. Leave what doesn't and have peace while eating. Thank you for this food. Thank you for this awesome food.

Bring the love into your food. Bring the thanks and the joy and see the smells or smell the smells and see the sights of everything that's on your plate. You will do far better than trying to be picky, picky, picky about the things that we're eating.

So, figure it out. What foods feel best for you?

You probably already know. Write it down. The ones that don't, that aren't so good for you, write those down too. Leave them be and have a focus.

I hope this helps you. Go for it!

We're going to keep practicing and bringing Ayurveda to life!
